We willnot accept any pitches that contain nothing more than a title for a piece or topic. Pitches and submissions should dive deep into the craft of writing and creativity; offering new ways for writers to approach their work and thinking. Due to the volume of pitches we now receive, we’re just unable to respond to all the pitches that aren’t a fit for this blog.
Those pieces absolutely have worth and interest, but fit better on other sites and with other publications. We don’t approve most of the submissions and pitches that come through. This is mostly due to the quality of the ideas and writing. We prefer 800 to 1,200-word guest posts (unless we’re assigning you a specific idea from the list above at a longer length we agree upon). We often have a backlog of guest posts and only use 4-5 per month, so it may take 8-10 weeks for your post to appear. We pay via Paypal at the end of the month your post appears (on Mass Pay, so no fees get taken out!), so make sure we have your correct Paypal email.
We read each email and regularly answer inside one business day.

If you’ve got helpful information for freelance writers, we encourage you to email with your pitch. Carol Tice started the Make a Living Writing site with a pretty simple goal, to be a central hub that helps writers make money writing. The site’s content focuses on helping writers find better-paying gigs, pitch more effectively, hone their craft, and even become an author.
Keep our core readership of professionals in multiple creative disciplines in mind. If your piece focuses on one discipline—say, type design or photography—consider what people from other fields can learn from it, and how you might appeal to those readers. If we accept your pitch, we will pay you for your writing and reporting. You will be expected to participate in a background check and sign a freelancing agreement to join our roster of writers. We have a full guide to our writing process here, we aim to create a great experience for authors and to help you publish your best work with us. We will immediately reject pieces which are submitted on behalf of your CEO or a nameless member of your team.
If you are earnest about your pitch, and have taken the time to understand our site and audience, then we’re more than willing to work with you. Please read through all the guidelines to learn how to submit a piece that has a better chance of acceptance. We buy exclusive first-time and reprint publication rights. We reserve the right to reprint your post on other sites of mine, and in future books or e-books I create. In this way, you will get an idea of how we are proceeding and how you need to approach us with fresh ideas. When the author submits the revision, the editors will review it, edit it, and assign a tentative date of publication. All submissions must beoriginal contentthat have not been published elsewhere. Outgoing links must be relevant to our blog.
We give you a byline with your photograph and biography, so readers can find out more about you and your work. You commit to our publishing policy, this is especially important to consider if you are writing about something learned while working on your own products. You can always ask your editor if anything is unclear. Tutorials — Either helping people get started with a new technology, or walking them through the process of building a project.
