As water travels downstream, it is channeled down through a pipe or other intake structure in a dam . Floating solar farms—or “floatovoltaics”—can be an effective use of wastewater facilities and bodies of water that aren’t ecologically sensitive. In 2021, renewable energy provided about 12.16 quadrillion British thermal units —1 quadrillion is the number 1 followed by 15 zeros—equal to 12% of total U.S. energy consumption. The electric power sector accounted for about 59% of total U.S. renewable energy consumption in 2021, and about 20% of total U.S. electricity generation was from renewable energy sources.
Although domestic or ‘off-grid’ generation systems are available, not every property is suitable for a domestic wind turbine. Recent advances in capture and storage, along with the global drive towardsNet Zero, has created an expansion in renewable and green energy production. These advances range from small-scale production, such as the placing of solar panels on a home, to large-scale facilities like offshore wind farms. For instance, the Earth’s supply of coal, oil, and other fossil fuels will eventually be depleted.
